Developing K.i.d.s

Developing Kingdoms in Different Stages (Developing K.I.D.S.) is a non-profit organization that services its community through four areas: Youth Development, Family Engagement, Community Support, and Workforce Development. The organization’s mission is to strengthen urban communities through inter-generational leadership, academic enrichment, and civic engagement.

Established in 2007, founder and CEO Kimberly Johnson saw firsthand the struggles youth face living in inner cities through her experiences teaching in Detroit Public Schools and as a non-profit director, which inspired her to create a community-based organization that meets the needs of youth aged 5-18 enrolled in underserved schools and communities.

The organization began its initial services in a community resource center, serving elementary and middle school youth, and later expanded its programming to offer engaging after-school programs with a diverse range of activities, including academic workshops, creative art sessions, and dedicated homework help. Now, Developing K.I.D.S. serves families from 50+ zip codes across the state with carefully designed after-school workshops focused on career exploration, soft skill enhancement and refinement, college exposure, and opportunities to develop life skills.

The Opportunity

Developing K.I.D.S.'s core philosophy is that leaders are developed and nurtured in every community that they serve, and through their work, aim to create stronger and vibrant communities where individuals and families are heard, valued, and thrive.

A key component of the after-school program is the College Access for Success program. The College Access for Success program is designed to support students in grades 9-12 with the skills and confidence necessary for successful high school graduation and a smooth transition into college, entrepreneurship, or the workforce. The program broadens students' perspectives on educational opportunities, inspiring ambition and aspiration.

Additionally, the organization provides dinner at all after-school sessions as part of its meal support program, ensuring that participants who may have missed lunch or lack access to nutritious home meals receive the nourishment they need to stay focused and engaged. The program plays a critical role in addressing students’ urgent needs by providing a secure and nurturing environment beyond school and home while empowering them and their families to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.

Ongoing Results

In 2024, Alternative Foundation provided $80,000 to Developing K.I.D.S. to support the College Access for Success program and afterschool meals. The funding enabled the organization to plan and transport youth on college tours across multiple states, as well as increase the number of healthy meals provided to students attending the programs.
